Utilities & Systems Engineering
|
The Utilities Department manages all aspect of the generation, distribution, and metering of energy for the University Central Campus and the Yale Medical Center which includes both the Yale School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Services include:
- Steam and Chill Water, provided to the Central Campus by the Central Power Plant (CPP) and to the Medical Center by the Sterling Power Plant (SPP). Steam and chill water are distributed to buildings through underground steam/condensate and chill water distribution systems.
- Electricity, which is generated in the CPP by gas turbines with steam as a by-product. Diesel generators generate power for peak usage and back-up power for buildings. Utility feeders from the local power company are another source of back-up power for the Central Campus. Numerous smaller buildings are fed directly by low-voltage utility company feeders. There is sufficient redundancy in power sources as well in the distribution system to minimize power failure, provide back-up power, and quickly restore the system in case of a failure. The Yale Medical Center is fed by utility feeders via two high-voltage utility substations located in the Medical School area.
- Utilities Metering of steam, chill water and electricity. Production and building intakes are metered by a Central Building Utilities Metering System (CBUMS). The CBUMS system provides real-time information, trending of metered data, alarm reporting, and consumption reporting for utility billing.
|
Systems Engineering provides engineering support of the Office of Facilities.
This includes:
- Project reviews
- Design and project management of utilities controls and automation systems
- Development of real-time energy metering systems for the University
- Design and management of energy conservation projects
