This year Yale hired Julie Newman, Ph.D. as its first Sustainability Director. Julie reports jointly to the Office of Facilities and the Office of the Provost. She is responsible for integrating the principles of sustainability into Yale’s operational functions, such as Energy, Waste Management, Transportation, Building Design & Construction, and Procurement.

The principles of sustainability aim to integrate economic, environmental and social goals and achieve a balance between them.

In an effort to develop a set of recommendations for sustainability three campus-wide Sustainability Committees have been created: The Energy Task Force, The Integrated Waste and Discard Management Committee, and The Transportation Policy Committee. These committees are comprised of University service personnel, staff, faculty and students. In the Spring they hosted a series of open forums on energy in an effort to engage members of the Yale community and solicit their feedback.

The Fire Marshal's Office has of a staff of eleven people. Seven of them are inspectors with various State certifications, including four State certified alarm mechanics. Daily responsibilities include alarm shutdowns and maintaining alarm and suppression systems campus wide.

The Fire Marshal’s Office provides physical inspections of all Yale University Facilities including real estate properties; acts as a liaison to the City of New Haven’s Fire Marshal’s Office; and reviews construction drawings for all University projects to insure code compliance. The Fire Marshal’s office also responds to all emergency calls on campus, including Fire, HazMat and selective medical emergencies. The University Fire Marshal’s Office investigates all fires for cause and origin, working closely with the City of New Haven’s Arson Squad, ATF and the Yale Police.

The Fire Marshal’s Office responds to about 1,500 incidents per year, which include fire alarms, “smells and bells” and Hazmat Inspections cover well over 11.5 million square feet of space every year.

The level of fire protection has grown by quantum leaps over the past 19 years. For example, all residential occupancies are fully protected by sprinkler systems as are most science areas. Over 300 protection systems campus wide exist. Our first female fire inspector, Grace Schenkle, will be assigned to the Medical School.

Like the famous Clint Eastwood movie, Yale Recycling deals with "the Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

The "Good" for Yale Recycling is in what it helps everyone at Yale accomplish each year. In FY 04 Yale recycled and donated more than 1,440 tons of materials, a new record. Cans, bottles, papers and boxes went back to industries for re-manufacturing into insulation, tissue, airplanes, boxes and

other items. More than 50 tons of computers, furniture, clothing, furnishings and supplies went to local and non-profit organizations.

The “Bad” for Yale Recycling is in the knowledge that not everyone at Yale recycles as required by State and local law. For every ton of paper Yale sends to tissue factories, or aluminum shipped to be re-made into airplanes, there are two tons of material sent to the Bridgeport Resco burn facility. Not only does Yale pay to have these items burned but we all breathe the results of our less-than-perfect recycling soon after….New Haven is downwind from Bridgeport.

The “Ugly” is the recognition that Harvard has a 38% recycling rate. This is far above Yale’s more modest rate of 18%. In addition to some innovative programs for recycling of wooden forklift palettes and food waste, Harvard folks simply do a better job of putting their papers and cans in the correct bins

What you can do
You can help Yale save the environment, reduce its budget, and make Harvard a little more humble in several easy ways:
Recycle your paper, cans, bottles and foils
If you need a desk side recycling box for paper, or additional bins for your building contact Yale Recycling. They can also answer any questions you might have.
Recycle your boxes
Empty and flatten cardboard boxes. Leave next to a recycling bin for housekeeping.
Call to have your computer recycled
Computer and related ectronics must be recycled by law. Erase the hard drive and call Yale Recycling to have it picked up. Working computers of recent vintage will be donated. Outdated and broken pieces will be sent to licensed Universal Waste processors.
Call to have your usable furniture and other items donated
If it is still in working order don’t throw it out. Call Yale Recycling! Yale Recycling regularly donates items no longer wanted by Yale departments to other Yale.

Grounds Maintenance covers exterior property from the building steps out, year-round. Responsibilities include landscape needs, litter control, waste removal, recycling collection and snow removal.

Landscaping needs consist of pruning, planting, turf care, trees, shrubs and flowers on campus. Snow and ice maintenance includes all sidewalks, driveways and parking lots. Grounds Maintenance has a fleet of 18 trucks and approximately 35 employees.
